The Force wielding Jedi could sense the presence of others as well their feelings, so why couldn't they sense that Palpatine was a dark lord of the Sith. Despite many within the Order sensing a plot to destroy the Jedi and even that the dark side surrounded the chancellor, the Jedi were unable to deduce Palpatines true identity as Darth Sidious. There are several reasons for this. First, Palpatine was highly proficient in the ability buried presence, which allowed him to hide his force sensitivity and his maline intentions from the Jedi. Second, the Jedi had built their temple upon an ancient Sith shrine as symbolic victory of the dark order. This was a huge mistake as Palpatine was able to use the shrine to boost his powers of concealment. Lastly, the Jedi had fallen into complacency and arrogance, believing that the Sith were destroyed for over a millenia and that they would never return. The Jedi had purged any teachings of the Sith from the order and were so fearful of the darkside, they no longer understood what it was. Therefore the Jedi were not well practiced in seeking out the dark side as they had not been required to do so until the events of the phantom menace, allowing Palpatine and the rule of two Sith to hide in plain sight.
