Boris Johnson has sparked Tory fury after appearing to break three Brexit pledges as his grip on the country looks to be weakening.

The Prime Minister promised back in 2016 as a part of his Brexit referendum campaign that Britain could have the EU's VAT on energy bills lifted. But now, Mr Johnson is refusing to scrap the rule, which was first brought in by the bloc back in 1993. It comes as energy costs are expected to skyrocket in Britain.

Tory hardliner Peter Bone has urged Britain's Tory government to believe more... in Conservative views. Brexiteer Peter Bone did so during this week's Business Questions to Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg. Mister Bone urged the Johnson government to cut VAT on energy bills.

Peter Bone told Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg:

"My right hon. Friend will have heard that the official Opposition are now adopting Conservative views. They believe in lower taxation and in leaving the European Union. Would it be possible for this Government to believe in Conservative views? Will the Leader of the House lay a statutory instrument next week removing VAT on energy?"

UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has said he "understands people's anxiety... about rising prices" and insisted he will "always be listening" to concerns. But the chancellor is coming under pressure from Labour and some of his own MPs to cut the VAT on energy bills.

Would it be possible for Britain's current Tory government to believe in Conservative views?

The question was asked by senior Tory MP Peter Bone to Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg and caused laughter in the Commons.

The Financial Times said the leader of the House, Mr Rees-Mogg, had argued against a hike in National Insurance in a Cabinet meeting, calling instead for savings to be made in government spending.
