Catherine Martin "The Egg" 2001.
The following action/intervention was for part III of The LAB, in downtown San Diego, CA. The LAB was a three part roaming project space that combined both exhibition and theater. In this video (9/10/2001, the night before 911), Catherine Martin carries her ceramic egg sculpture on Broadway, just outside of the pop-up LAB location. She and her sculpture were engaged by two intoxicated and relatively aggressive men. The video visually unveils stark perceptions of male dominance and misogynist behavior.

The artist, in collaboration with the LAB organizer Eric Wong, exhibited and performed with this sculpture at the two other pop-up locations. At each edition of the LAB, she placed tomatoes from her garden in the opening of the object, which hung suspended just off the gallery floor. Below the sculpture the artist wrote "train of thought" texts with chalk to form a mandala of sorts, and read from these texts out loud during various times of the exhibition.
