We discuss the term “Milanese buttonhole,” and what the devil it actually means!

The term was popularized by a thread company that called a line of their gimp thread “Milanese” to evoke Italian quality and sartorial taste, but it wasn't originally from Milan!

→ What is gimp?

A thread made by wrapping extremely fine silk around a core. Gimp was often used as a decorative detail on suits, and in time using gimp to decorate handmade buttonholes became known as “Milanese buttonholes.”

→ How are Milanese buttonholes made today?

After the buttonhole, traditionally the lapel buttonhole, is cut, the gimp is laid around the edges.  An additional extra-glossy thread is wound around the gimp and sewn into the cloth around the buttonhole.
