When a quantum particle with energy E encounters a step potential where 𝐸 is more than 𝑉, it partially reflects and partially transmits at the boundary. In the region before the step, the particle behaves like a free wave with both incident and reflected components. After crossing the step, the particle transmits as a wave with reduced momentum.

Key effects include partial reflection and transmission, highlighting the wave-like behavior of particles, even when classically, the particle would continue unimpeded.
