What did Grogu just see in hyperspace?
In the exciting first episode of The Mandalorian Season 3, Grogu is witness to some mysterious shapes while travelling with Din Djarin in hyperspace. What he saw was a pod of Purrgils - a semi-sentient species of massive whale-like creatures that are able to naturally enter hyperspace. Millennia ago, it was the purrgil’s ability to travel through hyperspace that inspired scientists to find their own way of entering the alternate dimension, thereby unlocking hyperspace travel to the entire galaxy. Early colonists followed the Purrgils to determine the safest routes from the Core Worlds to other areas, such as the Outer Rim.
This is not, however, the Purrgils first on-screen appearance. In Rebels, Jedi Ezra Bridger was able to establish a connection with a pod through the Force. In the series finale of Rebels, the group confronts Imperial leader Grand Admiral Thrawn. Using his Force connection to the Purrgils, Bridger pulls Thrawn's Star Destroyer into an uncharted area of space called the Unknown Regions. In a subsequent scene, Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren vow to retrieve Ezra, hinting at Ahsoka's continued search for Thrawn in the upcoming Ahsoka show. Meaning it’s possible this won’t be the last we see of these live-action Purrgils.
