Picked up the Roland MC-808 used at the Trading Musician in Seattle. They were very helpful and cool! Thanks!
I was looking for a companion for my Elektron Digitakt in the form of a multitimbral synth. Nothing was fitting the bill just right, and I can't get a Digitone yet, ;)
This unlikely candidate crossed my path and I went home first and did more research. It turns out this Roland gear from 2006 hit more checkboxes than you would think. It has a powerful sequencer and tons of synth sounds built in. Great Drums!!! It also does sampling, not as well as the Digitakt in many ways but the breadth of features can really make a full production value.
Motorized Faders are cool! Way more helpful than I would have thought.
On the whole there are definitely some limitations, but when paired with the Digitakt, none of them matter. They fill in each others gaps.
The first half of the video I am recording in one of the many layers of synth parts. My Elektron isn't playing any sounds in the video, but I did use it to jam on this later and it sounded amazing.
The second part is just me mixing the current song....its in it's infancy but this could grow into a full song.
My thoughts to Roland is that this is a great unit, they should revisit this and make a new version with all the old features in a smaller package (not too small). Maybe add a couple Roland Boutique virtual analog synths and a 4-op FM synth for a modern update, and of course allow more in-box editing. Finally, just offer more of the latest live sample mangling powers of my favorites and it would do well!
M-Audio Code49 works great for laying down the synth lines. You can also see my custom woodworking above for my 2 Roland Boutique synths and a Moog Minitaur. :)
