The rapid evolution of High-Speed Rail (HSR) has significantly impacted the transportation market in China, particularly the road and aviation sectors. HSR has emerged as a competitive alternative and has been well-received by Chinese citizens as a preferred mode of travel. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, HSR passenger numbers reached nearly 2.3 billion in 2019, comprising about 63% of all rail passenger travel in China. While HSR ridership has not fully returned to pre-pandemic levels, it has rebounded to 74% of railway ridership in 2021, indicating a faster recovery for high-speed passenger travel.
