Jakes's father Michael Thibeault was standing behind the glass with a clear view of his youngest son skating toward him during a tournament hockey game Saturday evening at the Blackstone Valley IcePlex in Hopedale.
Jake Thibeault was rushing down the right side of the rink and, just as he slid the puck on net, was checked by an opposing player. The hit propelled him head first into the boards in the corner of the rink, where his dad stood on the other side of the glass.
Jake Thibeault, 18, of Fitchburg, broke two vertebrae in his back and suffered a small brain bleed on Sept. 4, 2021, while playing with his club team, the 18-and-under Boston Bulldogs, at the Eastern Alliance Kickoff tournament over Labor Day weekend in Hopedale.
He collided with an opposing player, fell to the ice and went headfirst into the end boards. He had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher. Thibeault was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he had screws and rods placed in his back to hold his spinal cord in place. Thibeault, who dreamed of playing college hockey, was unable to move his extremities from the waist down.
Thibeault says the last year has taught him to take nothing for granted as he continues to work hard on his rehabilitation.
"Eventually, I will be on my feet, and I will look every person in the eye and thank them, but it would take the rest of my life to thank the people who have helped me," he said.
Thibeault says he is always trying to make the most of this new challenge, hoping to inspire others along the way.
"Looking back at it, yeah, it sucks, and I would pay anything to be on the ice, upright, working out regular, running, walking, living the life I lived," he said. "Of course I would go back to that tomorrow, but I do know, it happened for a reason, and that reason is something great in my life."
