Manu Raju, CNN anchor of “Inside Politics Sunday” and CNN’s chief Congressional correspondent, came to American University in Washington, D.C. in early November 2023 for an American Forum interview and q-and-a with students. Raju, an award-winning journalist, is known for his ability to find—and interview—Congressional leaders from all sides of the aisle throughout the halls of Congress. Raju talked with students about his reporting relationships with Rep. Kevin McCarthy, former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, Sen. John McCain and others as well as how he covers the unprecedented divisions and dysfunction today between and among Republicans and Democrats on the Hill. Raju also told students what it was like reporting from inside Congress during the January 6 insurrection, his views on journalists reporting on Donald Trump’s social media, and his predictions regarding the fight for control of Congress in the 2024 elections.
Raju—who is Indian American—also spoke personally with AAPI students about his family and career and the importance of representation in journalism. American University professor Jane Hall is moderator and executive producer of this American Forum, which was produced by the School of Communication with the nonpartisan Kennedy Political Union at American University.
In this segment, Raju talked about his approach to reporting, particularly a negative story. “What I do to maintain relationships is to be totally honest about what I’m reporting…All I want is for people to feel that I’m treating them fairly.”
