What is up dudes, dudettes, ballers, and players. Its ya boi MJ. Today I wanted to talk about how Markelle Fultz is making NBA history in a bad way. Like and subscribe for more fire content. Also, comment down below will Markelle Fultz bounce back from this horrific start?
Markelle Fultz was the number 1 pick in this year’s draft. Now there is always hype around a number one pick, but there was even more hype around Markelle Fultz because he was the consensus first pick undoubtedly and most importantly he was a guard. There’s only been a handful of number 1 picks that were guards in NBA history, only 17 in 70 years and in the past 40 years, only 6 picks including Markelle Fultz were guards. Those 5 other picks were Magic Johnson, Allen Iverson, Derrick Rose, John Wall, and Kyrie Irving. All of these players are All-Stars, some are MVPs, some are champions. Not only were they not busts, but they are all great NBA players. And before the Derrick Rose haters come out, Derrick Rose was the youngest MVP in NBA history. Take that. Nah but for real, injuries messed his career up, but even now he’s a solid player.
So when you are a number one pick as a guard, that typically means that the player is transcendent. Number 1 picks that are guards haven’t come by often at all. Markelle on the other hand is not living up to any of this. At the moment, he is averaging 6 points on 33% shooting and 1.8 assists. Yeah that’s not going to cut it. There is all this drama with his shoulder injury where his agent has said that he first had fluid drained out, then he changed the statement to saying that cortisone was injected in his shoulder and that’s why he hasn’t been able to shoot. The 76ers camp has been blindsided by all this injury talk and are getting roasted by fans who thought the organization was cautious with players.
Apparently, Markelle Fultz changed his jumpshot to compensate for his shoulder injury, but then there’s the 76ers president Bryan Colangelo that roasted Fultz. He said that “His reluctance to shoot, his shot mechanics, have been affected by what’s been going on, or vice versa.” What the heck, Fultz? You mean to tell me that because he changed his jumpshot, his shoulder got messed up? And the 76ers did nothing about that? But it doesn’t stop there, Colangelo also said “It’s become very obvious he just hasn’t been willing or committed to shooting outside of the paint.” WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON? Fultz had a good midrange and 3 in college. Now all of a sudden he can’t shoot at all?
One of Markelle’s biggest strengths was his confidence. He even said that he was aiming to be MVP in his first season. Now he doesn’t have enough confidence to shoot a jumpshot? There is no way that he can survive in today’s NBA as a guard without at least having the threat of pulling up. I know it’s early in the season and I want Fultz to succeed, but by being a bust, he’s going to be the only number 1 pick guard in over 40 years that wasn’t ALL-Star caliber. I’m not saying that Markelle Fultz is a bust yet, but without his confidence, he’s on his way to being a bust and breaking the trend of great guard number 1 picks.
