heathenX Inkscape Tutorials: episode 088 - Wrapping text around a 3D globe
A few years ago heathenX and Richard Querin created a series of tutorial videos for Inkscape, a Free and Open Source vector graphics program that can be downloaded from http://inkscape.org
The original heathenX website no longer exists, however I have obtained a backup of all their tutorial videos and will be uploading them to Youtube over the coming months. All the videos are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license

If you don't want to install an extension then the same effect can now be achieved with Live Path Effects, but it requires more manual tweaking.
The Effects menu is now called Extensions.
Effects ‣ Render ‣ Grid is now Extensions ‣ Render ‣ Grids ‣ Grid.
Note that there's also Extensions ‣ Render ‣ Wireframe Sphere. It doesn't give exactly the same result, but is worth checking out in case it suits your needs better.
