You mentioned that your 9 year-old has talked to you about some pain that she’s having underneath one nipple and there does seem to be a little bit of a lump under it - you’re wondering if this is normal or not. And ultimately I suggest talking with her doctor and after performing an exam they’ll be able to give you tailored information and advice about it. But generally speaking, it is normal for girls to develop breast buds and this is one of the first things that will happen during puberty. In addition to starting to grow hair in the pubic area and under the armpits, their skin becomes more oily and not only do they get taller, but they may also have wider hips and have an accumulation of fat around their buttocks and their stomach. And all of this is a normal part of puberty in addition to starting the period. So yes, breast buds are part of that. A small lump may form underneath the nipple and then the area may start to get a little larger and then the breasts increase in size. And this happens over time and it’s kind of gradual for most girls and the time at which it happens is different from girl to girl. Puberty can start as early as 8 and some are late bloomers and don’t start to go through it until they’re 12, 13, 14. And so, again, I do suggest talking with your child’s doctor and they’ll be able to determine if it’s part of puberty or if further investigation is warranted.
