WCBS-AM SIGN OFF, FINAL 12 MINUTES, AUG. 25, 2024
A storied chapter in radio news history closed in the final minutes of Sunday, Aug. 25, 2024, as WCBS News Radio 880 signed off. The New York AM news giant–which debuted in August 1967–switched over to ESPN shortly after midnight. For its final time on the air the station broadcast the distinctive sounds of WCBS over the years, showcasing the sounders it used mixed in with memorable news and sports voices. I am proud to have contributed to this at the 4:16 point of this broadcast. You will hear there a brief section of Bill Fayen on WCBS which I recorded on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 10, 1969 in my grandmother’s house in Southport, Connecticut. (WCBS contacted me about adding my upload to their archives–you can find the complete newscast I recorded that day elsewhere on this channel). A roll call of so many of the names heard on WCBS over the years is read–then the station goes to black after playing John Lennon’s “Imagine.” This is followed by close to a minute of silence, then the ESPN feed begins.
It’s so sad to see this great New York news station vanish from the airwaves. Well done, WCBS 880–we will miss you.
