The secret of the "impossible" artifacts of St. Petersburg
Let's start, as usual, with the background. In St. Petersburg, there are many architectural monuments and artifacts made of natural stone, which raise many questions among the modern layman.
The portico of the New Hermitage is decorated with 10 figures of atlantes by sculptor A. I. Terebenev made of gray Serdobol granite, standing on pedestals made of rapakivi granite and supporting architraves. According to legend, the same sculptures of Atlantes, reaching 5 meters, were hollowed out of natural, solid stone, and this work lasted 2 years with 150 stone-cutters in the middle of the 19th century. They made from a reduced sample, which was made by the sculptor Galbig, and this sample was sent from Munich.
The Hermitage collection contains a collection of vases from whole breeds, which amaze with their size and craftsmanship.
Vase from Taganay aventurine. The weight of the vase is more than one and a half tons. It was manufactured in the Yekaterinburg lapidary factory from 1835 to 1840. Another 2 years were required to deliver this vase to St. Petersburg.
