BERCOW BREXIT: Speaker takes center stage of emergency debate - PATIENCE SIR, it will be rewarded!
House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has paved has granted an urgent debate on whether the United Kingdom can leave the European Union without a deal. He said the matter is “proper to be discussed” much to the cheers of rebel MPs. The debate came form Sir Oliver Letwin who got three minutes to make a speech explaining why MPs must debate this.
Letwin did not use his full three minutes. He said this is an urgent matter, and MPs should debate it. Bercow said it is a proper matter for an emergency debate and asked if Letwin had the support of the house for MPs.
Some MPs shouted “no”, but more than 40 MPs stood up to indicate their assent (the procedure required) and so Bercow allowed the debate.
Immediately afterwards, MP Peter Bone rised to make a point of order. He complained that Letwin did not follow the right procedure. Bercow told him that Letwin did lodge his application properly.
