Originating in the rough moorlands of Devon, England, the Dartmoor pony is a reliable riding companion with a plucky spirit. The treacherous weather of the moors shaped the Dartmoor up to be a pint-sized powerhouse, with endurance and a serene temperament.

Prehistoric tombs indicate the Dartmoor has been roaming the craggy moors since ancient times, but it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that the Winterwells imported the breed to Jorvik to join their Welsh ponies.

With a compact yet hardy build, the Dartmoor has a history of being used in rugged labor such as mining. It might be surprising to learn that it is also an excellent competitor in the hunter/jumper and dressage rings, and is also a natural choice for pleasure riders.
