Kidney Stones: Learn@Visible Body
Kidney stones are solid deposits of salts and minerals that develop within the kidneys. They form when the urine is concentrated, allowing stones to crystalize. Kidney stones are painful while they are passing, but do not cause permanent damage to the ureters (long tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder). Pain medication and lots of water should do the trick, but sometimes a stone will get stuck and must be surgically removed.
