Women play a vital role in small-scale wood enterprises. They grow trees for timber trade, run furniture factories and handle technical and financial responsibilities in companies. Despite women’s hard work and dedication, they often face gender-based challenges such as limited access to training and resources. But, every day, they are breaking barriers and making significant contributions to the sector.
Here, we feature the stories of women from the Mekong Region who are demonstrating that gender equality is crucial to making a positive impact in the small-wood sector.
About the Forest Smallholders Project
The European Forest Institute (EFI) is supporting wood-based micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Thailand, Viet Nam, Lao PDR and Myanmar to operate legally and sustainably. Under its Forest Smallholders Project, EFI has tested solutions to MSMEs’ key challenges in pilot projects. Lessons learnt from these pilots are documented and disseminated nationally, regionally and internationally. Through its support to MSMEs, EFI promotes gender equality and women’s economic empowerment in the forest sector.
